Gralee School in Leeton, NSW provides specialised education for students with diverse needs, focusing on fostering independence and personal growth. The school offers a range of programs tailored to support student learning and well-being, plus hosts fantastic events such as Sensory Fun Days for students with disabilities in the Leeton community.

For this project, we worked with educators to create a dedicated sensory room for students to enjoy. The room needed to offer both calming and engaging sensory experiences, all while meeting the unique needs of its students. Feedback from Principal Carly Rae was very positive:

“Our students absolutely love this space, and it is used frequently in our school. I only wish I had paid for and organised this earlier!”

Take a closer look at some of the highlights in this space…

A FUN FAVOURITE

Sight, sound, and touch- the bubbles in this room are a clear favourite with the Gralee students for good reason. Students can watch the mesmerising bubbles and lights, hear the soothing sound of bubbling water, and feel the gentle, rhythmic vibrations of the tube for a multisensory experience.

By placing the bubble tube in a module, students can enjoy the magical effect from the mirrors behind, as they give the illusion of multiple tubes. This Gralee module also includes fibre optics which are safe for active play, and add another visual and tactile layer.  Plus – extra seating always comes in handy!

LOOK UP!

Is it a skylight? No, it’s LED sky tiles working their magic. Not only do they bring the outdoors in, but the sky tiles also create a feeling of peace and calm, helping boost the mood, reduce anxiety, and spark the imagination.

With the ability to switch between colours, Gralee students can interact with the panels to create different moods within the room and develop colour recognition skills.

A CAPTIVATING CROCODILE

No snapping from this friendly crocodile! Offering students hands-on fun, this activity panel helps develop hand-eye coordination and problem solving abilities, and improve fine motor skills. At over 170cm long, there’s also plenty of space for several students to use the panel at the same time.

ALSO FEATURING…

Liquid Floor Tiles
These mesmerising tiles are a fun way to explore cause and effect and develop motor skills, all while adding colour and visual interest to a sensory space. With their non-slip bottom these tiles can handle plenty of action, including wheelchairs.

Sensory Mood Table
A Mood Table adds a soft. cosy glow to the room, and helps students with colour recognition and emotional regulation as it gently fades through the colour spectrum. Including lightweight, portable resources like a mood table also keeps the room flexible and accessible – very important in a small space.

Ortoto mats
Ortoto Massage mats are a terrific way to stimulate muscles in the hands and feet, and develop the vestibular system. Their puzzle-like design means they can be easily interlocked together to create a pathway or joined together to create a larger play area.

Beano Circle Beanbag
This comfy beanbag provides proprioceptive input and is a safe ‘crash pad’ for students looking to burn off extra energy.  As it has more structure than our other beanbags, it also provides a supportive seat for students with varying levels of mobility. And let’s face it – sitting in a beanbag is always fun!
